About
An Upward Journey
Balarama Dasa
Vincent Bronson Formicola was born in Hayward, California, and was raised in San Diego. When he was sixteen years old, he met His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in the form of one of his books. The Perfection of Yoga, a book based on the teachings of the Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, was gifted to him by a saintly devotee named Radhanath Dasa, a disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda. Impressed with the knowledge in this small but powerful book led him to visit the Hare Krishna temple in San Diego one year later. He became friends with the devotees and became a regular attendee. Mahat-tattva Dasa (later Bhakti Ananda Tirtha Maharaja) encouraged him to stay in the temple for three months, which has now turned into more than twenty years. Within the first two years, he met His Holiness Giriraj Swami and was accepted as his formal disciple and given the name Balarama Dasa. His first several years were spent distributing Śrīla Prabhupāda‘s books throughout San Diego. The following years were spent studying scripture, giving classes and caring for the temple and devotees in various ways. At present he serves as the temple president of ISKCON San Diego. Based there, he travels throughout America and the world sharing the message of Krishna consciousness.

His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in this world in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent religious scholar and the founder of the sixty-four-branch Gaudiya Matha, liked this educated young man and convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge. Srila Prabhupada, who at that time was known by his given name Abhay Charan, became his student, and eleven years later, in 1933, his initiated disciple.
At their first meeting Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati requested the young man to broadcast Vedic knowledge through the English language. In the years that followed, Srila Prabhupada wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita, assisted the Gaudiya Matha in its work, and, in 1944, started Back to Godhead, an English fortnightly magazine. Single-handedly, he wrote the articles, typed and edited the manuscripts, checked the galley proofs, and even distributed the individual copies. Once begun, the magazine never stopped; it is still being published, now in over thirty languages.
Recognizing Srila Prabhupada’s philosophical learning and devotion, in 1947 the Gaudiya Vaisnava Society honored him with the title “Bhaktivedanta.” In 1950, at the age of fifty-four, Srila Prabhupada retired from married life, adopting the vanaprastha (retired) order to devote more time to his studies and writing. He traveled to the holy city of Vandavana, where he lived humbly in the historic Radha-Damodara temple and for several years engaged in deep study and writing. After accepting the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in 1959, he began work on his life’s masterpiece: a multivolume translation of and commentary on the eighteen-thousand-verse Srimad-Bhagavatam.
In 1965, at the age of seventy, after publishing three volumes of the Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada came to the United States to fulfill his spiritual master’s mission, enduring a torturous two-month journey on a freighter and suffering two heart attacks on the way. When he arrived in New York City, he was practically penniless. Only after nearly a year of great difficulty—in July of 1966—did he manage to establish the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Before his passing away on November 14, 1977, he had guided the Society and seen it grow to a worldwide confederation of more than one hundred ashrams, schools, temples, institutes, and farm communities.
In the twelve years between his arrival in the U.S. and his departure from this world, with a vigorous schedule of translating, writing, and lecturing, Srila Prabhupada circled the globe fourteen times and visited six continents. His books, highly respected by scholars for their clarity, depth, and authority, have been translated into over fifty languages, and the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, established in 1972 to publish his work, has become the world’s largest publisher in the field of Indian culture, religion, and philosophy.
His Holiness
Giriraj Swami
H.H. Giriraj Swami was born Glenn Phillip Teton, the only son of a respected Chicago lawyer who was later appointed judge. In April 1969, while studying at Brandeis University in Boston, he met His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), from whom, he felt, he learned more in one brief exchange than he had learned in his many years of academic education. After graduating from Brandeis cum laude, he accepted formal initiation from Srila Prabhupada and received the spiritual name Giriraj das. Giriraj quickly became a leading member of the Boston center and was soon given the opportunity to go to India with Srila Prabhupada and helped establish his mission there.
In 1972 Prabhupada appointed Giriraj president of ISKCON Bombay and trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. Since then, he has made many significant contributions to Srila Prabhupada’s mission, most notably overseeing all aspects of the development of Hare Krishna Land in Juhu, Bombay. He was instrumental in the acquisition and development of the Bhaktivedanta Ashram in Govardhana and led the development of the Kirtan Ashram for women, the Bhaktivedanta Hospice, and the Vrindavan Institute of Palliative Care, all in Vrindavan. Through his efforts, Giriraj Swami has become renowned for the austerities he has accepted, his loyalty and dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission, his ability to raise funds and cultivate important members of society, and his care for devotees around the world.
In the year following Srila Prabhupada’s departure in 1977, Giriraj was awarded the renounced order of life and appointed president of ISKCON’s board of trustees in India. In 1982 he was appointed to ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission, and he went on to oversee the Society’s activities in Bombay, Mauritius, South Africa, Spain, Portugal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Giriraj Swami has also taught at the Vrindavan Institute for Higher Education and continues to lecture and to give presentations at japa retreats and workshops around the world.
Presently based in Carpinteria, California, Giriraj Swami is now focusing on one of the main personal instructions he received from Srila Prabhupada—to write. He is the author of Watering the Seed, Many Moons, Life’s Final Exam: Death and Dying from the Vedic Perspective, and I’ll Build You a Temple: The Juhu Story, about Srila Prabhupada’s monumental efforts in Bombay. He is also working on books about his search for a spiritual master and his early days in the Boston temple, his travels with Srila Prabhupada in India, and Vaishnava holy days.
